Jem's Journal Entry
Maycomb County sure is a small place to live, so small you should be careful with what you do because soon every one will know. Down here in the South, most of Maycomb's citizens are just some unhappy racist folks. But no one really sees the life from a black man's shoe.
Now all this drama started to heat up when Mr. Ewell said that his daughter, Mayella Ewell, got raped by a black man named Tom Robinson. Another guy usually gets appointed to try these cases, but somehow the jury chose Atticus Finch, my father, to back him up. I think they saw this coming and probably knew he was fighting a losing battle. Anyways, my father is an excellent lawyer, he taught me every thing I should know, though up to my mind's capacity.
The two witnesses' stories were pretty convincing, 'cuz it was from Mayella and Mr. Bob Ewell of course. They both said Mayella was sitting on her porch not doing anything, Mayella asks Tom if he can do some chores for her (he always does favors for her), so Tom goes in and they say he just raped her right there and she started screamin'.
Funny how every one got so convinced, but when my father hit em' back with that cross-examination, it became clear that they just hiding their discrimination towards Tom but still the jury had to go with what the crowd wants to hear. I say the verdict ain't fair to ya'll black men. It's like if every day they lose more and more respect.
Naw I really don't see why they have to be treated so inhumane. So, Tom ended up going to jail. I remember Atticus taught me that all the jury men are suposed to look at the guilty person but no one seemed to look at Tom. Even so, he ended up going to jail.
I don't understand why people don't see it my way, the way Atticus taught us, what have black people ever done to us? I say this is another mockingbird dead coming from us white folks, another sin committed.

Movie isn't Always Better than the Book
There are important differences in Harry Hooke's 1990 film of the Lord of the Flies and William Golding's Lord of the Flies novel that changed the entire outcome of the story. Three differences are: The kids were all from military school, they already knew each other, and the Lord of the Flies didn't really have anything symbolic in the film.
To start off, all these kids were all from military school in the film, which means that they're all well trained and know how to use their surroundings as an advantage. This makes you think, a bunch of 12 year old school kids would react different to being stuck on an island with no adults, as portrayed in the book. This makes the military training a higher chance of survival in the island.
Furthermore, this leads to the fact that they all knew each other when they landed in the sea. This factor is really important because since they know each other, they aren't afraid to speak freely, it doesn't show how the kids got to know each other and that Ralph became immediate tribe leader because everyone knew him. The film doesn't capture the essence of the coming-of-age theme because it doesn't show how the kids interact with each other or some intimite feelings.
Another reason why the film is so different from the book is that the lord of the flies didn't really have a significance. It doesn't even show why it's called the "Lord of the Flies". In the book, the lord of the flies is described as a satanic figure that Simon would talk to, but the closest thing to satanic in the film was the sow head they cut off. It didn't show how such evil can influence a good person to make harmful actions like William Golding's novel did.
All these factors, the fact that they're all from military school, they all knew each other, and the Lord of the Flies doesn'y symbolize anything. Though, they both have the same idea, but if u start to look in depth, you'll notice a huge difference in Harry Hooke's 1990 film to William Golding's novel.

Taking Part in a Trial
Taking Part in a Trial
Lord of the Flies
Juan Diego Jimenez
Roger, is he fully guilty for the murder of Piggy or is he Jack’s pawn? Should the death of two boys be forgotten? This is what I will prove today. I will provide you with evidence, facts, actions and even quotes from the accused, a.k.a. the Executioner, which will prove to you, beyond any reasonable doubt, that Roger is guilty of this crime. That he is fully aware and responsible for his actions.
When the boys’ first crash landed on the island, Roger was seen as an antisocial recluse, hiding his true intent to wreak havoc amongst the boys. Quote from Golding pg. 22. “A slight furtive boy whom no one knew who kept himself with an inner intensity of avoidance and secrecy.” Unquote. At that time, he gave the impression that he was lost and confused like all the others. Later it seemed he gained more confidence to speak about.
Ladies and gentleman, I would like to remind you that he is the one that had the idea to vote for a chief, and not make Jack immediately the leader. This shows that Roger already had something against Jack, which later I will explain about their rivalry.
Now I would like to demonstrate that Roger is a loner and uncommunicative by nature which explains why he is so cruel. To start off, he smashes a sand castle of three littluns: Henry, Percival and Johnny. What was Roger’s true intention? In what way is this beneficial to Roger and the others? Well it seems that to Roger, this is what satisfies him. And the others, they can’t do anything about him.
There was another time where Roger and the others were hunting pigs; suddenly Roger sees steaming pig poo and excitedly points it out. This shows how his savagery kicks in and he isn’t bothered by disgusting things.
After the sand castle incident, Roger follows Henry from a distance, and starts throwing rocks at him, but purposely missed. Again, what is the point of this? Now he really did leave a message to the boys. He could have hit Henry if he wanted to. By throwing rocks he was able to calculate with precision which shows ample control of his actions and his impulsivity as well.
Furthermore, Jack announced that he was having a feast, and everyone was invited; Roger didn’t appear at the feast. Roger was never one to get along well with the others, even though it seems that it could be difficult for him, he just doesn’t put any effort on getting along with others. Even though these are small pieces of evidence, this all adds up to why Roger is so cruel with everyone, and shows he is an independent person who has a mind of his own.
As the story progresses, Roger is now recognized and feared when he kills Simon. It’s quite odd how Simon was mistaken for the “beast” when really he’s completely the opposite; the only “good” character when all of society collapsed. Also how he helped steal the glasses from Piggy, his tribe members started fearing him.
Before I start talking about Piggy’s murder, I would like to state more factual material after Piggy’s death. Now after the pig kill, Roger sharpens both ends of his spear. This is very important because this shows that this is premeditated malicious intent. Roger wanted to do the same thing they did with the sow; cut his head off and stick it on the spear. Instead, his target was Ralph.
After the Piggy incident, Roger tortures Sam and Eric to join the tribe. This shows that at this point, Roger’s cruelty is out of control; which causes him to cause pain and kill. And actually Roger did convince Sam and Eric to join the tribe. When Roger committed the act of killing Piggy and torturing Sam and Eric, Jack was up to a point where he feared Roger. So Jack announces that the tribe goes back to the fort, but immediately sends Roger back to be on guard duty.
Obviously Jack doesn’t want to be anywhere near Roger; no one would want to be stuck on an island with Roger. Also how Roger walked past Jack and slightly pushed him with his shoulder, Jack didn’t do anything to him because he was afraid. If anyone else had disrespected Jack like this, he probably would have hit him or some kind of punishment.
At the scene of Piggy’s murder, it was clear that Roger was indeed the one that pushed the boulder that killed Piggy, also that Jack wasn’t expecting Roger to do this, and he didn’t even order Roger to do this. Jack was all small talk, but Roger actually did commit this crime. All the way, Roger’s full intentions were to kill someone and leave a message to all the kids stuck in the island with him.
Now, listen to how Jack reacted to this: “See? See? That’s what you’ll get! I mean that! There isn’t a tribe for you anymore! The conch is gone…” In other words, he wasn’t ready for this and was completely shocked, basically babbling about it. “The conch is gone…”meant that society has been distorted which marked the end for any hope for civilization to be restored.
This evidence is proof to you, beyond reasonable doubt, that Roger is capable and fully responsible of killing Piggy.

Rosy Peach Benjamin Moore 2089-20

Rosy peach
now she's in a good moodrosy peach
pacificatory princess
palatable peacemaker
precatious of her polished fingernails
like ice sculptures.
Her rose aroma
speaking to us
saying it's safe; for now.
Her red dress
accompanies her smile
as she goes out for dinner
looking at her wedding picture.
She takes off her rose mask
sits
with both her feet
up at her desk
looking at her minions.
Her red lipstick
slimed
across her daughter's cheek
brings back
the joy.
Her rose
inside her
is weak
soon
it begins to diminish
back to her
other side.
Its like
a never ending cylce
that just
seems
to come full cirlce.
Its funny
she rarely shows her rose
inside of her.

A Child Called "It"

A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer
Publisher: Omaha Press
Genre: Memoir
Where I got it: I bought in Barnes and Nobles during christmas vacation.
One sentence summary: Dave tells the story of not only his daily struggle against his abusive parents, but his bravery of surviving near death situations in one of the most severe child abuse cases in California.
First sentence of the book: March 5, 1973, Daly City, California- I'm late.
First chapter review: The chapter begins when Dave is in his final days of child abuse where it finally comes to an end because a teacher reported his bruises on his face and he was sent to live with his aunt. Later on, the story goes back to where it all started.
Verdict: This story is truly heartbreaking and the author makes it easy to understand the immense pain he was going through, best book I've ever read.
Cover comments: The cover is a picture of Dave as a child while God's hand reaches out for him assuming he now has some one that looks over him and protects him.

Darkness Shows its' Face
The declining sun
the darkness
the flames
the wood exploding.
"We ran as fast as we could."
Silence struck among them,
his face went white
uncomfortably embroiled.
"We saw thew beast."
The twins breathed simultaneously,
gripped in each others arms
holding tremulously to each other.
"All right then, we'll look for the beast."
The maze of darkness
full of claws
full of the awful unknown.
A menace
a nightmare.
A cry echoed through the darkness.
"We'll have to go and climb the mountain."
The excitement of exploration
like walking on rotten eggs
edging along the ledge.
The spear, the conch
The beast, the fire.

Where I'm From
I am from an abandonded baby bed, and F.A.N.A.
I am from the nurses who were like family to me.
I am from the wind blowing through the terrace and the outsider.
From Grandma's bells ringing at my ear drum.
I am from a coconut and the shell barricading its sweetness.
I am from Sunday prayers and Monday's rude awakening.
From the respect to God and mother's discipline.
I am from the "slowly but surely" and the spotless furniture.
I am from the "I don't care if it hurts, just do it" and "pain don't hurt".
I am a saint and a satanic.
From the Disciples of God and a sinner.
I am from an anonymous couple and a lost boy.
I am from a steak well-done and a salad freshly served.
From the mother who wanted something she didn't get and vice versa.
I am from the devil's torch and the angel's touch.
I am from the confused and forgotten, yet to be found.
I am from those guys over there-who are you?

Japan Earthquake
The japanese felt a pang of terror on March 11th when an earthquake with a magnitutude of 9.0 hit Japan's northeastern coast. The earthquake was so powerful that the sound was audible even to deaf people. The death toll has not yet been told, though they know that it is crucial to save the copious amounts of missing people. The world now has eyes on Japan and many countries are doing everything possible to help. The Japanesegovernment have decided to deploy helicopters. These special helicopters have capacious containers full of water in order to decelerate the boiling on the reactors.
Other countries have initiated search parties with adept personnel, to facilitate the government's job. The search parties must be fastidious about even the smallest pieces of glass which could indicate if a house was there or a car. The government still grapples with what will happen to the reactors, that is if they fix it.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

By Maya Angelou
The memoir is about a girl named Marguerite Johnson and her older brother Bailey Johnson Jr. who were shipped away to Stamps, Arkansas because of their parent’s calamitous marriage during Segregation. Momma (Grandmother) was the reason Marguerite, also known as Maya, grew up in a much disciplined way.
Maya became one of the only graduate students in Lafayette County Training School and received a diploma. She wasn’t disappointed that the man giving her the diploma was a white man, but that she still didn’t have the authority to “choose her fate”. Another incident of racism happened when she had an excruciating toothache and she went to a white doctor but he didn’t want to attend her.
Later Maya and Bailey needed to move to San Francisco to find new jobs and a school, along with Mother. After having a huge argument with Dolores, Daddy Bailey’s girlfriend, Maya ran from his house and ended up sleeping in a car. At the parking lot she met some other kids that had ran away from home. There she learned that it’s not only all about your family and how they feel but also that you have to think of yourself first, and then act upon the situation.
Maya began to be more independent and she looked for a job which was to be a conductorette driving in the vast San Franciscan streets. Eventually she accomplished this and became the first female black driver in San Francisco. And she became pregnant by having sexual intercourse with a teenage boy and accepted the job to live on as a mother.
As Maya grew, alongside inspirational stories of family members and the support of her brother, she realized that she had always been insecure of herself and she should open up more. When she found out how insecure she was, she discontinued this and found out life was more successful to her.
I really did find this book interesting because it takes you in a tough life of a teenage girl in the segregated south. I can clearly vision her struggle and how bad it is to be a victim of racism. Of course I’ve heard of stories about racial bigotry during that time, but I had never come to realize how terrifying it really was until I read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. I have never read a book that a girl suffers so much physically and emotionally by any other author than Maya Angelou.
The story went further as she grew in age. It is written in an adult form, but at the same time a child’s mind.

In I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings Maya grows up with the thought that she is an “unwanted” kid along with her brother Bailey who is in search to find out why their parents left them. In their adventures, they stumble upon racial bigotry, getting to know who they are. Also, William Shakespeare was a major influence in the growth of Maya. She knew about him because she grew up with books around her and she had nothing else to do. Shakespeare has set an example for Maya and shows that she is easily inspired only that she needs a little motivation.
I think Maya was very strong deep inside her because it should be difficult to understand why your real parents left you at such a young age. Even with the pain of racism and the act of being raped, she still managed to get through and I respect her for that.
Some lines I loved: “Give it everything you’ve got. I've told you many times, Can’t do is like Don’t Care. Neither of them have a home.”
“Their shiftier shapes might have held a message that in my new happiness and with a little bit of time I’d soon decipher.”
“Neither could do with or without the other, yet the constrictions of conscience and society, morality, and ethos dictated a separation.”
“Neither could do with or without the other, yet the constrictions of conscience and society, morality, and ethos dictated a separation.”

What I believe
I believe that the rain relaxes your mind
and soothes the soul.
I believe bugs sting you for making sins.
I believe exercising
makes you feel satisfied.
I believe in speed and strength.
I believe in running the extra mile.
I believe a person's flaw helps create character.
I believe you act the way you were raised,
but think with your own mind.
I believe fury
should not be dealt with anger.
I believe it is healthy to keep in touch.
But even so,
I still wonder,
what's the point of moving forward,
if there's no end?
and soothes the soul.
I believe bugs sting you for making sins.
I believe exercising
makes you feel satisfied.
I believe in speed and strength.
I believe in running the extra mile.

Runners, Riots and Rage

On a sweltering Sunday morning I change my clothes and put on my pair of running shoes. I meticulously closed my door to not wake up my parents for I knew they would get angry. Next, I grabbed the house keys from the kitchen and my phone and quietly went out the entrance.
As I pressed the greasy elevator buttons, am exotic yawn had come out of my mouth. I was deciding whether to press the PB button or back to the top. I knew I had to overcome this laziness so I just had to go down. The elevator doors opened and I was already on my way to the Cinta Costera. Everything seemed so quiet. The guard that always greets me when I go run wasn't present which seemed bizarre to me. Though its fun to walk in the middle of the street knowing that no one will run you over.
I reached the starting point in which I began to run. Somehow this makes me feel so much better. Sometimes the reason I go running is because dissension occurs in my family whether it involves homework or bad grades. Twenty minutes had elapsed as I almost made it to the two-mile marker. When I finally made it, I feel a little chill. By now I was fully awake, but even so I had to rest for a while.
Now all I had to do is get all the way back. My legs were burning, but I knew I had to keep pushing forward. I suddenly remember my mom saying "Embrace the pain!". I chuckled to myself but I stopped when I saw three police cars zoom across the empty street. I tried to concentrate on my running but I couldn't help to notice that all the police men were fully armed. They were driving the opposite direction I was running.
Thinking it was another accident, I looked back to see the three police cars had skidded down the street so they could stop sideways. I then noticed the men were deploying barriers to blockade every street exit or entrance. The police had dispersed in groups of three, some of them to a corner of a street, others hiding behind structures or riot shields, and the rest were setting up the barricades. There were about twenty or so. The last three had ran towards my direction. I could barely see, due to the sweat in my eyes so all I could see now is a big black blurry image approaching another jogger. I squinted my eyes and noticed the police man was talking to the other jogger while pointing towards my direction.
I assimilated into the crowd of joggers as they too began to walk to where the police man was pointing at. The jogger that had talked to the police man said that he had told him to go home. Knowing that some kind of attack was imminent, I began to head home. It took me a while to get back home due to the immense pain on both of my legs, though I still got home.
Calamity arose when police started shooting smoke bombs into the air, shouts of angry workers filled the streets. I immediately made my way back home while going through certain obstacles like barriers or parked cars.
When I got home I took a bath. Then, I turned on the TV to switch to the news channel. Both my parents were awake due to my loud stomping when I stormed into the house, they sure did seem a bit angry. A couple hours passed and I used my dad's military binoculars to see the riot. I then saw a man being shackled onto the bars of a police car. I could clearly tell that the government was in a state of anarchy because the police was sending more and more men to the front. So now the police had apprehended a man belonging to the riot. With intense interrogation, he admitted that the riot was because these construction workers don't get paid enough and the government doesn't due anything about it.
He also admitted other important members that he conspired with. It turns out this man was an important figure in this syndicate, in which members of the riot would lionize him for having such a genius plan.
Months later the man was arraigned for conducting a riot at the Cinta Costera.

Lights Out!
I realized that I had fallen asleep on the couch. My throat and hands were all dry. I had a book in my hand and a pen in the other. I turned on a fan but it seems that it wasn't working. No wonder I was sweating so much. I shifted my head towards the clock but it wasn't moving. I meticulously stood up to not make any noise. My cell phone's battery had been drained. As I moved toward the window, I noticed that not a single street light was on, except the ones on the other streets. I immediately spotted a group of technicians with a ladder but then a couldn't see any further because they were under my building. A transformer must of been damaged or some idiot crashed his car into one of those posts.
I knew it was late at night, but didn't know the exact time. As I turned around I accidentally stepped on one of my dog's toys. Then I heard footsteps coming down the hallway. This will surely come out as planned, I thought. I already knew that it was grandpa. Because of the fact that he was the only one in the house besides me. Though the rhythm of his footsteps seemed unusual to me. I have always been well-aware when it comes to studying people and their movement. I start to remember that he had told me he takes midnight sleep walks, so that figures it must be around midnight.
A flashlight turns on and I held my breath. I wouldn't want to get in his way due to the fact that he has dementia, which would cause him to attack me at first sight. Becoming one, the darkness assimilated me. I used my advantage of having a black shirt. He knew that someone was out there. Next, he gave up trying to look for the intruder and reached for his phone. He called someone with a deep voice, kind of like a business man. Dissension occurred when his tone of voice grew to an angry one. He was discussing about some stocks the man across the phone had bought.
With my book in my hand and pen in my mouth to restrict myself from breathing I quietly slipped by him and prayed he wouldn't notice. Which he didn't. I waited for him to raise his voice up again so I could open my door which makes a lot of noise when it opens and closes. I felt proud of myself, getting into my room and not letting him catch me. I would have surely be lionized by my bold acts if anyone were to have watched this.

The Guerrillas
Timoleon Jimenez conspired to steal important documents from a Colombian government building. Dissension occurred when Timoleon mentioned there will be drum-tight security, but as one of the leaders of the F.A.R.C. he then decided to go stealthy. When they got there, Timoleon and five of his guerrilla needed to be meticulous with their surroundings. At the first sight of a lone guard patrolling the entrance, Timoleon told one if his men to slit his throat in order to disguise himself. The disguised guerrilla then told another guard to open the gate and he acknowledged. The guerrilla soldier talked with the guard for a while and the guard had mentioned a soccer game was imminent causing many guards to pull out of there posts. After putting the guard into use, the guerrilla silently put the guard to sleep. He then ran back to inform Timoleon.
Timoleon assimilated the new information in which he would make his next move, enter the building. As they ran from cover to cover, they came across a man that was watching naked women on his TV which became the most bizarre image. The leader said to ignore that and continue on with the mission but one of the guerrillas stayed and watched. Next, they hid in a bush and twenty minutes had elapsed in order for the soccer game to start. Finally, Timoleon walked silently up the stairs to find that the doors to the important documents were open. All of his documents were their, some showing the locations of drug factories, other showing where the F.A.R.C. mostly operates. This will surely be a calamitous event for the Colombian government. He manages to steal the documents and puts it in his coat pocket.
But the guerrillas radio Timoleon and inform him that an important character is approaching the room he is in. With no time left, Timoleon quickly reacts and tackles the man to the ground. The guerrillas come behind him and strap him to a chair for interrogation. He then reveals many of the other guards are at a building behind this one watching the soccer game. He also admits he is an important politician in the Colombian government. They unstrap the metallic bars but the gorilla-like man shackles his escape. The team doesn't kill the politician but they do hurt him badly.
The next day when Timoleon got back to his hideout they lionize him for stealing these sensitive documents. But later they found out on the local news that a guerrilla had been apprehended while watching disturbing images on TV under the sweltering morning sun. The TV shows a video of him being arraigned for being an accomplice of the stolen documents. Later it shows that the government is going into a state of anarchy because of the politician they had beat up. It turns out the next day he couldn't talk for the speech he was supposed to attend.
